"I had an amazing experience working with Patrick at the beginning of our winterguard season. I felt lost and had no idea what audio to use for my winterguard show. He was quick to respond, had lots of ideas, and was very helpful throughout the entire process. I look forward to the future seasons with Patrick on my design team!"

Pre-Made Show Music

Pre-made show music edits are available for programs that want a professionally produced soundtrack without the cost or timeline of a custom project. Each edit is built the same way I approach my custom work, with careful pacing, clear musical impacts, and transitions that support visual design and choreography. The difference is that these soundtracks are created in advance and made available for immediate use, allowing directors to download a complete show track and begin designing right away!
These pre-made edits are especially useful for winterguards, figure skaters, gymnasts, artistic swimmers, competitive dancers, and cheerleaders who need strong show music quickly or are working with a limited budget. Every track is designed to stand on its own as a full performance soundtrack, with intentional musical phrasing, dramatic builds, and clean endings that work well in a competitive arena environment. The goal is simple: give programs access to high-quality show music that sounds professional, performs well on the floor, and helps bring a show concept to life without the wait time of a custom edit!

Winterguard Music & Sountrack Editing

Winterguard music editing is my specialty and a major focus of my audio work. It is also my favorite type of project to take on because of my background and long connection to the marching arts.My approach focuses on shaping the music so it breathes with the choreography, builds momentum at the right moments, and creates clear musical impacts that help performers and audiences feel the story of the show. The goal is not simply to cut music together but to design a complete performance soundtrack that feels intentional from beginning to end.Today, my winter guard audio edits are used by programs across the country, including scholastic world and independent world guards. My music can be heard each season at the Winterguard International World Championships in Dayton, Ohio.

Music Editing FAQ

What is a music edit?
A music edit is the process of combining, trimming, rearranging, and enhancing audio tracks to create a single polished soundtrack. In performance activities like winterguard, dance, cheer, figure skating, artistic swimming, and gymnastics, a music edit shapes the pacing of the routine so that the music supports choreography, impacts, and transitions. In other settings such as podcasting for example, editing helps create a clean and professional listening experience by improving flow, removing mistakes or unwanted extra noises, and balancing sound levels.
Who needs professional music editing?
Professional music editing is used by performers, coaches, directors, choreographers, and content creators who need a soundtrack that is clear, well structured, and ready for performance or broadcast. Competitive winterguards, dance teams, cheer teams, figure skaters, and artistic swimming programs often rely on edited music to match the timing and energy of their routines, not to mention overall performance length based on circuit rules. Podcasters and media creators use editing to make their content sound more polished and engaging.
What types of activities use custom music edits?
Custom music edits are commonly used in winterguard, dance, cheerleading, figure skating, artistic swimming, and gymnastics. Many podcast creators and media producers also use music editing to improve sound quality and pacing. Any activity that requires a specific runtime, dramatic pacing, or seamless transitions can benefit from a professionally edited soundtrack.
Why is professional music editing important for performances?
A well-designed music edit improves timing, clarity, and emotional impact. It helps performers hit visual moments with precision, builds energy at the right points in the routine, and creates a soundtrack that feels cohesive from beginning to end. In competitive environments, a strong soundtrack can make a routine easier to perform and more engaging for judges and audiences.
What is the difference between custom music editing and pre-made show music?
Custom music editing is created specifically for a program, routine, or show concept. The music is built around the choreography, theme, and timing of the performance. Pre-made show music is a professionally edited soundtrack that is created in advance and made available for multiple programs to use. Pre-made edits are usually more affordable and can be downloaded and used right away.
How long should a performance music edit be?
The length of a music edit depends on the activity and competitive rules. Winterguard shows are typically 4-9 minutes long, while dance or cheer routines may be much shorter. Figure skating, artistic swimming, and gymnastics also have specific time ranges depending on the division and level of competition. A professional music editor can help structure the soundtrack to fit the required time while maintaining strong pacing.
Can music be edited to match choreography?
Yes. One of the main goals of professional music editing is to align the music with choreography and visual moments. This includes building musical impacts for tosses, jumps, lifts, and other highlights in the routine. Careful editing allows the music to support the movement and help performers stay in sync with the structure of the show.
What makes a good performance soundtrack?
A strong performance soundtrack has clear musical phrasing, smooth transitions, and well-placed impacts that match the choreography. It should build energy, guide the pacing of the routine, and maintain clarity in a large performance environment such as a gymnasium or arena. Good editing ensures the music feels intentional rather than simply cut together.
Can music edits improve audio quality?
Yes. In addition to rearranging music, editing can also improve the overall sound quality of a track. This may include balancing volume levels, enhancing clarity, removing unwanted noise, and adjusting the mix so the music sounds strong on large sound systems or in recorded media like podcasts. Oftentimes, vocals can even be separated or removed from songs if lyrics or certain words aren’t appropriate for the performance setting.
How do I order a music edit?
Ordering a music edit typically begins with sharing the music selections or titles, the desired length of the track, and any important moments in the routine. From there, the editor arranges the music, builds transitions and impacts, and produces a final soundtrack ready for rehearsal and performance. Many editors also offer pre-made show music that can be downloaded instantly for programs that need a soundtrack right away.

Beyond Music Editing

In addition to performance music editing, I also provide professional audio and vocal editing for spoken word and media projects. This includes podcasts, radio spots, interviews, narration, announcements, and other voice-based recordings that need to sound clean and polished.Audio editing can involve removing background noise, cutting mistakes and pauses, tightening pacing, balancing vocal levels, and preparing the final file for broadcast or online distribution.Whether the project is a podcast episode, news segment, voiceover track, or promotional audio spot, the goal is the same: deliver clear, professional sound that keeps listeners focused on the message instead of the recording.
